Sri Lanka ETA & Passport Requirements (AU, USA, Europe, India, UAE)

Before you think about scooters and south-coast sunsets, get entry rules right. This overview is for travellers from Australia, the USA, Europe, India and the UAE (Dubai) using official Immigration & Emigration / ETA channels.

Passport validity

Sri Lanka Immigration states that travellers should hold a passport valid for a minimum of six months from the date of arrival. The official ETA application materials repeat this six-month rule. Renew early if you are close to expiry.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Tourist and many short-stay visitors use the online ETA system at eta.gov.lk (also linked as eta.gov.lk/slvisa). Always apply on the official site - avoid third-party lookalikes.

Policy note for mid-2026 (verify before you fly)

Official ETA notices published on eta.gov.lk describe that from 25 May 2026, nationals of a listed set of 40 countries - including Australia, USA, India, UAE, United Kingdom and many European states - may be eligible for a free tourist ETA for 30 days (with conditions, including double-entry rules as stated on the notice). What else Immigration looks for

• Suitable purpose of visit (tourism / business as declared).
• Adequate funds for the stay and onward/return travel.
• Return or onward ticket evidence as required for visit-visa cases.

• Paying on a fake ETA website.
• Name mismatches between passport and ETA.
• Assuming visa-on-arrival replaces the need to check current ETA rules for your nationality.
• Planning a multi-week island motorcycle trip without checking whether a visa extension is required after day 30.
