First-Time Riding in Sri Lanka for Foreign Visitors
10 October 2026 · Riding tips
First Asia ride? Travellers from Australia, Europe, the USA, India and Dubai succeed in Sri Lanka every week - when they respect licensing, left-side traffic, and heat management.
Before you book a bike
- Confirm motorcycle entitlement on your home licence.
- Budget time for the BIA DMT temporary licence (airport.lk).
- Choose an automatic scooter if you are rusty with gears.
- Plan a short day-one radius around Katunayake / Negombo.
Left-side traffic drills
If you are from the USA or much of Europe, spend twenty minutes in a quiet car park: left turns, roundabouts, and “bike feels wrong” moments. Look right first when pulling out - your old habit will lie to you.
Heat, rain and hydration
- Ride early, rest in the mid-day blaze, resume late afternoon.
- Monsoon cells arrive fast - waterproof layer in the underseat.
- Electrolytes matter as much as sunscreen.
Cultural soft skills
Horn use is communication, not aggression. Give monks, school children and free-range dogs extra space. Ask before entering temple grounds with riding gear that feels too revealing - carry a light cover-up.
Confidence ladder
- Day 1: local roads only.
- Day 2: 60-90 minutes coastal.
- Day 3+: longer transfers once braking and mirroring feel automatic.
If you learned to ride in India or Dubai
You may adapt faster to dense traffic, but Sri Lanka’s left-side rule still catches muscle memory from the Gulf, and hill wetness differs from desert riding. Do not skip the slow first day.
